INTRODUCTION:

VIRGEN DEL CARMEN

A store tells that in the 17th century two images of the Virgen del Carmen were sent from Spain to Paucartambo in Cusco and Paucarqolla in Puno, the statues vary being one of them better than the other, the most beautiful stayed at the capital of the province in Paucartambo, this generated dissatisfaction among the inhabitants and start claims without results, resigning themselves to finally perform long anual trips in pilgrimage to offer their dances and songs. Emerging the dances of the Qollas, another tale reveals that in the colonial era in the Asunción hacienda in the Kosñipata valley, same that counted with a chapel and a Virgen Carmen image sculpted in wood and of a considerable weight, taking her year after year to Paucatambo for the Korpus Christi celebration day, but the indians revealed destroying numerous jungle haciendas and killing white people for them later attack the Asunción church wounding the virgin and then thrown her to the Amaru Mayu river (snakes river) in which it kept floating being saved and taken to the Paucartambo church. Nowadays the Chunchos dances offer a special choreography.

 

NINAMARCA: CHULLPAS OR WARI CULTURE CEMENTERY

The Wari empire was the capital and the name of the first empire known in the andes. Unlike with the Chavin culture, the Wari expansion is not just limited to the dissemination of religión and artistic inffluence. The Wari were military conquerors. They build and maintained important military posts across the peruvian territory. Some of this places where like Pikillacta close to Cusco, Cajamarquilla close to Lima, Wilcawain close to Huaraz. They stressed in art, technology and architecture. When they conquered other cultures they prohibited any existent tradition. However the Wari’s were defeated and their culture vanished.
TRES CRUCES DE ORO (Three golden crosses):
Located at 3,739 m.a.s.l. and at 35 Km. of Paucartambo. In the months of May, June, and July at dawn looking to the east it represents an extraordinary natural event with a variety of colors and shapes appreciated from the natural balcony of Akhanacu.

ITINERARY:
 
JULY 15TH FIRST DAY: CUSCO / CHULLPAS DE NINAMARKA / PAUCARTAMBO

Departure from Cusco at 8:30 am approximately. Heading to the Paucartambo village the trip will last 4-5 hours, along the way we’ll visit the Chullpas of Nina Marka. Arrival to Paucartambo, hostel check in, Lunch. Free afternoon to apréciate the different local dances. Dinner. Overnight.
NOTE.- Through the night you’re invited to participate in the houses of the different dance groups and know from their customs.

JULY 16TH SECOND DAY: PAUCARTAMBO / TRES CRUCES DE ORO / PAUCARTAMBO / CUSCO

Very early departure at 1:30am to Tres Cruces to appreciate the dawn. The trip will last 1:30 a 2 hours, the purpose of leaving so early is to get preferential places in Tres Cruces, once the sun is out we’ll have an espectacular view of the jungle. Return to Paucartambo for breakfast. Morning free to hear mass and continue enjoying the dances and customs of this people. Return to Cusco at noon. Arrival in Cusco. Overnight.
